Strengthening direct democracy through the introduction of a binding referendum
There is enormous active resistance from the “status quo” to the binding referendum, making it currently impossible even to put the binding referendum on the table as a position. The people who would want to champion this feel unsafe and fear repercussions.
To solve that problem, MST wants to gauge the opinion/preference of the Dutch population through opinion polls, which is a way to quickly and easily gain insight into the opinions of the Dutch population on political issues.
For each issue, the voting ratio of the Dutch population is examined.
MST, The Citizens’ Initiative, then states: “This is our party position, this is the outcome of the quantitative or qualitative statistical research, this is what the population wants; this is what the majority of the population wants. The outcome of the polls will be the guiding principle that MST will, in principle, champion (even if that opinion differs from our party position).
Should MST, the Citizens’ Initiative, with sufficient support from eligible voters, manage to realise this intention, and should the implementation of this method then prove fruitful, the time will have come to still introduce the binding referendum.
My Vote Counts! The Citizens’ Initiative strives to strengthen direct democracy through binding referendums. This is the best means of increasing citizens’ involvement and participation, promoting transparency and accountability, breaking deadlocks, broadening the political agenda, and offering the flexibility to respond quickly to changes in society.
More direct influence – Greater trust in government
By giving citizens direct influence over important decisions, the gap between citizens and politicians is narrowed and trust in government is increased. Binding referendums enable citizens to raise topics themselves and resolve controversial issues. This fosters an inclusive and participatory democracy in which every voice counts and citizens feel heard.
