Binding referendum to increase citizen involvement
Barack Obama once said that the greatest danger in politics is apathy. For the 2023 House of Representatives elections, turnout was 77.7%. In Rotterdam and Rijswijk, however, only 64.3% voted. The number of eligible voters was over 13.4 million. Almost 3 million people didn’t vote.
At 50% turnout, 6.7 million people didn’t vote
For European, local and provincial elections, turnout is much lower, often around 50%. These are worrying numbers. Trust in our politicians has been extremely low for years. This needs to change.
More citizen involvement through a binding referendum
The binding citizens’ referendum offers countless ways to increase citizen involvement. It gives them direct influence over proposals. In addition, they can also submit their own proposals for a binding referendum. Whether involvement and willingness to act will increase significantly as a result remains to be seen. However, it will certainly have a positive effect. Everyone wants to be heard, after all. Citizens want the major problems in their country to be solved. A new political system is necessary for that.
